A Look into the Worst ATS Teams of 2022 and Projections for 2023

"Against The Spread" (ATS), a term universally known in the sports betting industry, measures how a team performs relative to point spread betting throughout a given season. While some teams outshine, others find it challenging to step up their game. Today, we will analyze the teams that fell short ATS in 2022 and anticipate their performance for 2023.

The Worst Against the Spread (ATS) Teams of 2022

1. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: The Tampa Bay Buccaneers completed the 2022 campaign with a less-than-stellar 8-9 record. They managed to secure the top spot in the

NFC South and finished 4th overall in the NFC. Unfortunately, their journey was cut short when they succumbed easily to the Dallas Cowboys with a 31 to 14 scoreline in the NFC Wild Card game of 2022. The need for strengthening was evident as the offensive line faltered, putting the Buccaneers in line to be remembered as having one of the poorest rushing offenses in the past twenty years.

2. Chicago Bears: The Chicago Bears were 3-14 in 2022. They finished 4th in the NFC North and 16th in the NFC. The scapegoat, Justin Fields (QB), was mocked mercilessly throughout the season for what was deemed one of the worst seasons in the team's history.

3. Indianapolis Colts: With a disappointing record of 4-12-1, the Indianapolis Colts ended their 2022 journey in 3rd place in the AFC South and a mere 15th in the AFC overall. The

team's underwhellming start of 3–5–1 led to the dismissal of their head coach, Reich. Subsequently, former Colts offensive lineman Jeff Saturday stepped in as the interim head coach. Though he saw an initial victory in his debut game against the Raiders, the team struggled thereafter, failing to secure any additional wins and concluding the season on a disappointing 7-game losing streak.

Underperformance is often due to a multitude of factors - unexpected injuries, coaching issues, lack of form, and inconsistent gameplay. By closely analyzing why these teams couldn’t cover the spread, bettors can leverage this knowledge for future bets.

2023 Projections: A Turnaround on the Cards?

Having entered 2023's exciting new season, it's vital to evaluate whether these teams have the potential for a turnaround.

1. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are projected to rebound significantly in 2023. With an emphasis on strengthening their offensive line and bolstering the rushing offense, they're expected to sharpen their gameplay significantly. The Buccaneers are anticipated to address deficiencies from the previous season and capitalize on their strengths. However, football is unpredictable, and performance relies on not just their strategies but also how well they adapt to the dynamic nature of the sports landscape.

2. Chicago Bears: The Chicago Bears are heading into the 2023 season with a mix of anticipation and optimism. As the team is focusing on rebuilding key areas, they are expected to enhance their overall performance. The projections lean towards a stable season where they could potentially make a significant impact in the NFC North. Their success would highly depend on aspects like roster health, consistency in performance, and the evolving dynamics of their competitors. Some experts foresee a possible wild card spot if their offseason improvements mesh well during the season.

3. Indianapolis Colts: The Indianapolis Colts are projected to improve their standing in the league this season. There's optimism about the team under the leadership of their new coach and a redefined game strategy. Their performance depends heavily on the stability of their offensive line, the development of their younger players, and their ability to maintain momentum throughout the season. If these factors line up favorably, the Colts can expect a season that includes a strong fight for a spot in the playoffs and an improved record compared to their previous season.

A poor ATS performance one year doesn't necessarily doom a team for the next year. In fact, consistent underdogs often become "overachievers" ATS due to oddsmakers’ adjustments, offering value to sharps who foresee a rebound.

The one constant in sports betting is uncertainty. As bettors, it's crucial to identify trends and learn from past performances, but the real art lies in predicting future trends. Teams that underperformed against the spread in 2022 had much to reassess, but with room for improvement, they invite intriguing betting opportunities in 2023. A discerning bettor remains open to possibility and change, continually evolving their strategy with the ever-changing landscape of sports performances.
